Woman imprisoned 18 years for endangering child’s safety

SARIKEI: A 21-year-old woman was sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after she was found guilty of endangering a child’s safety.

Angel Yang Pei Yun, from Kapit, who committed the offence under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, received the jail term before Judge Stella Augustine Druce, effective October 31, the date she was first remanded.

Upon completing her sentence, the court also imposed a RM50,000 good behaviour bond without deposit for two years, to be backed by two local sureties, and to perform 240 hours of community service.

She has since been sent to Sibu Prison.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Aiman Zarith, as well as prosecuting officer, Insp. Herry Alban Ali.

Julau Police Chief, DSP Alif Haiqal Ramesh Abdullah, in his statement reminded parents and guardians to remain vigilant in safeguarding the welfare of children under their care.

“Parents or caretakers must always prioritise the safety and well-being of children. Their protection is crucial at all times, especially to prevent any situation that may threaten their lives,” he said.
