MIRI: A 22-year-old woman was killed after the car she was driving skidded off the road and plunged into a water-filled ditch near Kampung Angus along Jalan Persisiran Pantai Bekenu in the early hours today.
Juwita Aishah Jublee was found trapped inside the submerged Perodua Axia when rescuers arrived at the scene.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said firefighters from the Batu Niah station received a distress call at 1.21am and travelled about 35km to the location, arriving shortly after 2.20am.
Rescue personnel discovered the vehicle partially submerged in a ditch amid thick roadside vegetation.
Firefighters extricated the unconscious victim before handing her over to Ministry of Health personnel at the scene.
She was later pronounced dead by medical officers.
The operation ended at 2.52am.
Six firefighters were deployed in the operation, with police and medical personnel also present at the scene.
The cause of the accident is being investigated.
