CAIRO: A 47-year-old Italian woman died after two cruise ships collided on the Nile in southern Egypt near the city of Luxor, German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing the ANSA news agency on Sunday.
Officials from the Italian consulate are in contact with the woman’s husband and with tour operators assisting other Italian passengers who were travelling on the vessel, ANSA reported, citing the Italian Foreign Ministry.
Based on an initial reconstruction of the incident, the ship carrying dozens of Italian tourists collided with another vessel shortly after 7 pm (1700 GMT). Four cabins were destroyed in the impact.
The woman fell during the collision and sustained fatal injuries, the report said. She died shortly afterwards despite rescue efforts. Other Italian passengers were reported to be safe.
Luxor, in southern Egypt, is a major tourist destination, known for its ancient temples and the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. – BERNAMA-dpa
