SIBU: An elderly woman was killed while several others were injured in a five-vehicle crash along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman here today.
The fatal accident happened at around 11.20 am when a Toyota Hilux, travelling from Sibu Jaya, lost control and veered into the opposite lane.
Sibu Police Chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, who confirmed the case, said the Hilux then collided head-on with a Perodua Myvi carrying two occupants.
“As a result, the 64-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver, a man in his 70s, sustained serious injuries.
“Following the initial impact, the Myvi was subsequently hit by three other vehicles coming from behind,” he said.
The woman’s body was handed over to the police for further action, while the injured Hilux driver was extricated from the vehicle and rushed to Sibu Hospital for immediate treatment.
Zulkipli stated that the drivers and passengers of the other vehicles involved in the multi-vehicle accident only suffered minor injuries, and were also taken to the hospital.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
