KUCHING: A 28-year-old unemployed woman was sentenced to one month in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today for stealing two handbags from a shopping mall last Thursday.
The accused, Nur Dzrien, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code before Senior Assistant Registrar, Abdurrahman Abrar Jarni.
According to the charge, she committed the offence at a store in the mall at 7:20 pm on November 6. The offence carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a possible fine.
Based on the facts of the case, the complainant, who worked at the store, saw the accused in the toy section taking an item and concealing it under her clothing.
A review of the store’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage later showed the accused hiding a pink handbag under her clothes.
The complainant subsequently detained the woman at the back door of the store and found two handbags in her possession.
A police report was lodged, and investigations found that the two handbags, worth RM81.80, had been taken without payment.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani, prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.
