KUCHING: Efforts to raise public awareness on breast cancer prevention continue to be strengthened through the launch of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held in conjunction with the annual global campaign.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, said that the initiative serves as a vital reminder for women to prioritise early screening and self-awareness.
“Through initiatives by the Pink Ribbon Support Group, women are encouraged to go for early screenings.
“Breast cancer can only be detected through screenings, self-awareness and self-examinations. Early detection remains the best form of treatment,” she said during the launching ceremony here today.
She added that continued collaboration with agencies such as the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) offers women better access to early detection services.
“With the screening services offered, women who have never undergone any examination can take their first step towards safeguarding their health.
“The cooperation of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) in hosting this awareness programme for the past three years has also been commendable,” she said.
Hasidah expressed hope that the initiative would continue to receive strong support from more agencies to further enhance public awareness on the importance of early breast cancer detection.
“The Pink Ribbon Support Group is a non-governmental organisation that embodies the strength and resilience of women facing breast cancer.
“Its success in establishing a dedicated activity centre for patients and survivors is proof that moral support plays a crucial role in recovery,” she said.
On another note, she expressed hope that the establishment of a dedicated Sarawak Cancer Hospital could be realised soon.
“This is to ensure that patients in the State can have better access to comprehensive healthcare and treatment.
“We want to see a specialised oncology hospital built in Sarawak so that all cancer patients can receive the best care possible,” she stressed.
She also urged continued efforts in advocating for the establishment of the cancer hospital as a reflection of the state’s commitment to the well-being of its people.
Also present were DBKU Mayor, Datuk Hilmy Othman, LPPKN Director, Jimbau Munggat, and Pink Ribbon Support Group Sarawak’s President, Suriani Rapaie.
