KUCHING: Women are being encouraged to strengthen their digital capabilities to stay competitive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said digital proficiency is now essential, noting that programmes such as ICT4HeR are equipping participants with the basics of artificial intelligence (AI), photography techniques, mobile graphic design and business-related digital skills.

She said these capabilities open new opportunities for women to generate income, embark on entrepreneurship or advance their careers.

Nancy said this at the closing ceremony of the ICT4HeR – Women and Technology Programme held at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak last night (Dec 7), where she also presented awards to outstanding participants.

She added that empowering women with digital knowledge creates broader impact, helping uplift families and communities.

To support this effort, the ministry is strengthening the Laman Wanita (LaWa) initiative, which now houses 13 digital and financial literacy training facilities across seven states.

Beginning in 2025, the LaWa-on-the-Go initiative will also be expanded to reach women in areas without permanent facilities.

As of Sept 2025, more than 10,668 women have benefitted through 716 LaWa programmes.

Nancy also highlighted the success of the Gig@BIT initiative, which offers training in digital marketing, cyber security and Generative AI.

Last year, it benefitted 1,411 women through physical sessions and reached more than 170,000 individuals through digital platforms.
