KUCHING: The Women Empowerment: Upcycled Textile Products programme honours 11 women who have participated in it from November 2024 to February 2025.
Organised by WormingUp, the programme aims to empower women by equipping them with sustainable textile skills and entrepreneurship knowledge.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said the programme is not just about learning the skills, it is about empowering women to create sustainable businesses develop financial independence, and contribute to a greener future.
“Over the past months, I have learn these women have learned valuable skills, including understanding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), mastering the art of sewing to create bags, hats, pencil cases, and other products, operating electronic sewing machines to enhance productivity, learning marketing strategies to promote their products and gaining financial management knowledge to help them build a business in the future.
“These ae just skills, they are tools for a better future, and now we are not only celebrating their achievements but also recognising the power of knowledge and sustainability in transforming lives,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the graduation ceremony of the Women Empowerment: Upcycled Textile Products programme at Dewan Kampung Haji Baki here on Thursday (Feb 27).
Lo was also very impressed by the creative upcycled textile displayed by the graduates here.
“These items reflect not only craftsmanship but also a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing waste.
“I encourage each of you to continue this journey, explore new opportunities, and inspire more women to take charge of their futures,” he added.
The Women Empowerment: Upcycled Textile Products programme is a transformative initiative designed to provide women with essential skills in upcycled textile production and entrepreneurship.
Over four months, participants have learned in understanding SDGs, sewing techniques for creating bags, hats, and other fashion accessories, using electronic sewing machines, marketing & business development strategies, and financial management for future business sustainability.
By combining sustainability and entrepreneurship, the programme aims to empower women to become self-reliant while contributing to environmental conservation.
