KOTA SAMARAHAN: Women are one of the most important pillars of national development, said Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang.

Because of this, the federal government had always emphasised the importance of women empowerment through the implementation of various programmes.

She pointed this out in her speech at the Samarahan Level Sarawak Women’s Day 2022 Celebration at Kampung Muara Tuang Multipurpose Hall here today.

Rubiah pointed out that the roles and functions of women were now more challenging as they competed head on with the opposite sex in all fields.

“We can see that women have ventured into various fields which were previously exclusive to men.

“When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, many foreign workers had to return to their respective countries and women had to take up many technical jobs in ports, factories and so on,” she explained.

Elaborating further, Rubiah added that the ongoing pandemic had affected the country’s economy and incomes of many families. Because of that, many housewives opted to work to support their families.

“Because of that, we see now that the roles and function of women have been recognised by the government,” she said.

Rubiah said that the federal government had also called on public listed companies to appoint at least one woman as a board member and feedback to this suggestion had been positive.

“Therefore, I would like to emphasise that the government always supports women’s empowerment,” she stressed.
