KUCHING: Defying age and formidable odds, Sarawakian Wong Su Chung has made history as the first from the state to conquer Mount Everest and the first Malaysian to complete the Antarctica Dual Expedition.

At 60, he scaled the world’s highest peak before going on to achieve another extraordinary milestone – summiting Mount Vinson and completing a 111-kilometre ski journey to the final degree of the South Pole.

This achievement makes him the first Sarawakian to summit Mount Everest in May 2024, as well as the first Malaysian to complete the Antarctica Dual Expedition, a feat recorded in the Malaysian Book of Records.

The recognition was witnessed by the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, during a courtesy visit at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.

Also present at the event was Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.

According to Wong, every climb and expedition he undertakes is not about collecting trophies, but rather a journey to redefine human limits through discipline, perseverance and resilience.

He emphasised that his life philosophy is rooted in staying calm when facing challenges, thinking rationally, adapting to circumstances, and continuing to move forward.

“Throughout this journey, I have always overcome challenges. Conquering Mount Everest was not because I am extraordinary, but because I followed God’s guidance. Step by step, despite many obstacles, I was able to complete the journey and return home safely,” he said.

He hopes his journey will inspire the younger generation not to give up easily when faced with life’s hardships.

For Wong, the meaning of life does not lie in comparing oneself to others, but in striving to keep moving forward and becoming better than before.

“After going through all this, I truly feel it has been a journey filled with God’s grace. In these extremely challenges, I repeatedly experienced how God helped and guided me,” he added.
