SIBU: Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh has assured that he will continue to champion the inclusive development agenda in his constituency to ensure that no citizen is left behind in the pursuit of progress.

He said the struggle to defend the fate of the rural community, especially in his own constituency, will remain a priority as long as he holds public office.

“As long as I am given the trust to hold the office as a representative of the people, I will continue to be a strong supporter of inclusive and comprehensive development.

“I want to ensure that no community in Bawang Assan is left behind,” he said in his speech at the Ngiling Bidai ceremony held at Rumah Munie Sawang, Bukit Besai here last Saturday.

Wong added that physical development alone is not enough without social development and cultural empowerment.

In this regard, he acknowledged the important role of the Iban community in Bukit Besai who continue to maintain their cultural heritage and identity through the Gawai and Ngiling Bidai celebrations.

The Ngiling Bidai celebration, he said, not only marks the end of the Gawai season, but also symbolises the cultural strength and unity of the rural community which must continue to be preserved as the state progresses.

“Traditions like this reflect a strong identity. We must move forward, but never forget our cultural roots.

“This is also part of the development we are fighting for – development that values and heritage,” he added.

Wong also praised the spirit of unity among the people of Sarawak who were able to celebrate various festivals in an atmosphere of harmony and mutual respect.

“The true strength of the state lies in unity in diversity,” he said.

As such, he called on the people to continue to unite in efforts to develop a more prosperous and peaceful Sarawak, starting from the grassroots.

“Development must be comprehensive and based on justice. We cannot leave any of our people marginalized, especially in rural areas like Bawang Assan,” he said.
The ceremony was also enlivened with cultural performances, traditional dishes and the symbolic ‘gulun tikar’ ceremony which officially marks the end of the Gawai season.
