KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), in collaboration with the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), has generated RM177.56 million in exports through its international sourcing programme held in conjunction with the Malaysian Wood Expo (MWE) 2025.

A statement on Monday said the two-day November 10 MWE 2025 reaffirmed its position as a premier platform for advancing Malaysia’s timber and wood-based products industry.

MATRADE and MTC facilitated 358 business meetings involving 50 Malaysian exporters and 78 foreign buyers from 27 countries, the statement said.

MATRADE Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Seri Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz, said strategic partnerships are essential in driving sustainable export growth for Malaysian industries.

“This collaboration demonstrates how collective effort can propel Malaysia’s wood industry to new heights.

“Malaysia’s timber and wood-based exports, including wooden furniture, recorded a five per cent increase to RM22.92 billion in 2024, reflecting the industry’s resilience and sustained demand from global markets,” he said in the statement.

Mustafa said Malaysian wood-based products must be sourced responsibly and certified to meet international environmental standards, noting that global buyers increasingly value sustainability and traceability.

“Major export destinations include Japan, Singapore and Australia, where buyers increasingly recognise the quality and credibility of Malaysia’s certified wood products,” he added.

He also highlighted that buyers’ strong participation from key growth markets such as Egypt, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Turkiye at the MWE 2025 reflects Malaysia’s ongoing market diversification and also underscores growing interest and confidence in Malaysia’s high-quality, sustainably produced wood-based products.

Organised by MTC, the exhibition brought together global buyers, industry leaders and innovators to forge sustainable partnerships and explore Malaysia’s expanding expertise in value-added wood products.

Participating buyers were from Australia, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Mexico, South Africa, Turkiye and the UAE.

The wide range of products – from plywood, sawn timber and mouldings to medium-density fibreboard, veneer, wooden doors, flooring and furniture components – reflects Malaysia’s depth and versatile wood-based offerings. – BERNAMA
