SIBU: A wooden house in Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Teku, was destroyed in a fire on Sunday evening, though fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received an emergency call at 6.49pm, prompting firefighters from the Sungai Merah fire station to respond immediately. A second team from the Sibu Sentral fire station was also deployed to assist.
Fire crews arrived at the scene in Lorong Bahagia 5 at 6.59pm, around 10 minutes after the call. On arrival, they found the blaze had engulfed a non-permanent structure measuring about 30 by 30 square feet. The house was already fully ablaze and was later confirmed to have been completely destroyed.
The fire also spread to a Proton Wira car and a motorcycle parked nearby, both of which were burnt out.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre, firefighters immediately began suppression efforts to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. They deployed three hose lines stretching roughly 200 feet and operated four nozzles, drawing water from a nearby fire hydrant.
The fire was brought under control at about 7.20pm. Firefighters then conducted overhaul operations to extinguish remaining hotspots and ensure the area was safe.
A total of 19 firefighters were involved in the operation, supported by five emergency vehicles, including two Fire Rescue Tenders (FRT), one Compact Fire Rescue Tender (CFRT), one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit, and a Hilux utility vehicle.
The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still under investigation.
