MELUDAM: A RM17.3 million coastal erosion barrier project at Tanjung Riong Beach here is set to begin this year as part of efforts to protect the coastline from erosion and flooding.
Deputy State Secretary for Economic Planning and Development Datuk Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel said the initiative was crucial for ensuring public safety and restoring the land’s role as a key agricultural area.
“Coastal erosion is not just a threat to infrastructure but also to the safety and livelihoods of residents.
“This project is a crucial step in ensuring that Meludam’s coastal areas remain protected and sustainable,” he said when visiting the proposed project site yesterday (Feb 21).
In addition to the erosion barrier project, the visit also included a site inspection for the proposed construction of a parking area for the New Meludam Mosque.
Muhammad Abdullah noted that an open space in front of the mosque had been identified as a strategic location for the development.
He said the facility would not only provide convenience to worshippers but also serve as a community activity hub for local residents.
Also present were Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Norazah Awang Sohor, Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) director Datuk Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi, and Betong Division Resident Richard Abu Nawas.
