BETONG: The enforcement of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Amendment) 2025, beginning tomorrow (1 May), will put an end to the ‘double standard’ treatment of workers in this region.
According to Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Saribas branch chairman, Datuk Lim Kian Choon, the enforcement of the Ordinance will ensure that workers in Sarawak will enjoy equal rights and protection as those in Peninsular Malaysia.
“Although it went through a long process, we are grateful that it can finally be enforced.
“The enforcement beginning tomorrow (May 1) in conjunction with Labour Day is good news and a recognition of the workers in Sarawak.
“It means that workers in Sarawak will also enjoy equal rights and protection as those in Peninsular Malaysia, and there will be no more double standard treatment,” he told Suara Sarawak.
The former Betong District Council member expressed his appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for taking the lead in ensuring the harmonisation of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance and the Employment Act 1955.
“With the Sarawak Government’s agreement to amend the ordinance, it ensures alignment with international labour conventions and the latest amendments to the Employment Act 1955 (Amendment 2022).
“I am confident this amendment will benefit both employers and workers,” he said.
