KUCHING: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak is urging all workers in the state to be more proactive in claiming and safeguarding their rights following the enforcement of the amended Sarawak Labour Ordinance, which came into effect on May 1, 2025.
The significant amendments to the ordinance reflect the state government’s commitment to ensuring social justice and workers’ welfare in line with Sarawak’s rapid development post-independence.
“Empowering the workforce is a key factor in building a sustainable economy, and compliance with the Sarawak Labour Ordinance forms the foundation of a fairer and safer working environment,” said MTUC Sarawak Chairman, Zaidi Nasar, on Thursday.
“Key changes introduced include expanding the ordinance’s coverage to all workers regardless of sector or salary level, extending maternity leave from 60 to 98 days, and introducing a seven-day paternity leave.”
He added that other matters that are also included in the amendments are the reduction of the weekly working hours from 48 to 45 hours, the separation of sick leave and hospitalisation leave into 14 and 60 days respectively, and new provisions that offer protection against discrimination, forced labour, and sexual harassment.
Workers are now entitled to six mandatory public holidays, including National Day, Malaysia Day, Labour Day, and another day determined by the state government.
“Offenders who violate the ordinance may be fined up to RM50,000. To ensure the smooth implementation of the ordinance, MTUC suggests several key actions including awareness campaigns and workshops, advocacy for workers facing injustice, open dialogue with employers, and community engagement in upholding workers’ rights,” Zaidi added.
MTUC Sarawak reiterated its commitment to ensuring all workers in the state receive proper protection and can enjoy a fair and safe working environment for a more prosperous future for Sarawak.
