KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology conducted an entrepreneurship workshop yesterday to teach STPM students from Kuching and Bau about the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills for future ventures.

In collaboration with the Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Ministry and YogurtBB, Swinburne aimed to foster a spirit of entrepreneurship among school leavers and current Upper Six STPM students.

Through the workshop, students were encouraged to explore new paths and gain deeper insights into the entrepreneurial field.

During the event, Sarawak Tribune had the opportunity to speak with several organisers, volunteers and students about their thoughts on the workshop and how it could benefit them.

“Some STPM students were previously unaware that they could use this workshop to explore their academic interests, especially in relation to the food and beverage (F&B) industry, which is currently booming in Malaysia. However, many F&B ventures struggle to sustain themselves over time. Through the workshop, students learned how to address these challenges by developing problem-solving skills and focusing on the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. The programme also aimed to enhance their understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.”

CHRISTINA LAMAI, 20
Swinburne student volunteer

“From today’s workshop, our goal is to introduce the concept of entrepreneurship to the younger generation, with a specific focus on STPM students. They will learn how to brainstorm and collaborate with peers from other schools to generate new ideas and create innovative products using limited resources – such as the fruits provided during the session. I’m curious to see the results and hope they’ll be able to learn while also enjoying the experience.”

JOANNE LEE ZHIN YEE, 19
SMK Pending student

“What inspired me to attend this workshop today is my curiosity about entrepreneurship – I want to understand how the field works and what it’s like to start a business. I do have a passion for entrepreneurship, but personally, I’m more interested in becoming a designer. So, I wanted to see how this workshop might help support that passion in some way. I hope that by the end of the session, I’ll gain new knowledge and insights that I can apply to my future.”

OWEN BONG SAN HOW, 19
SMK Pending student

“I think today is a good opportunity to try something new, especially since we’re art students who also take Business subjects in school. I wanted to see how the information shared about entrepreneurship can help in starting a new business. To me, one important quality an entrepreneur should have is creativity. I hope that through today’s workshop, I can become more creative in generating new ideas for the future.”
