KUCHING: The 2026 ODEA World Chinese Tennis Team Championship has opened in Kuching, offering international visitors a chance to experience Sarawak’s hospitality, culture and scenic charm.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Batu Kitang assemblyman, Datuk Lo Khere Chiang, this morning (April 17) at the Sarawak Lawan Tennis Association (SLTA) grounds on behalf of Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.

In his speech, Ting extended a warm welcome to all international teams, officials and distinguished guests, expressing his honour in officiating the opening of the championship, which he described as a meaningful platform that connects players from across the world through a shared passion for tennis.

He said Sarawak was deeply honoured to host the championship, which brings together talented players from China, Australia, United States, Macau, Singapore, Japan, Mongolia, New Zealand and Malaysia to compete, connect and build friendships beyond the court.

“For many of you, this may be your first visit to Kuching, Sarawak. While we may not be a large city, what we may lack in size, we more than make up for with our warm hospitality, rich cultural diversity, delicious cuisine and pristine natural environment,” he said in the speech.

He encouraged participants to take the opportunity to experience Sarawak beyond the tournament, highlighting the state’s unique blend of culture, nature and local charm.

“I sincerely hope you will take the opportunity to enjoy not only the tournament, but also the beauty, charm and uniqueness of our beloved home,” he added.

Addressing the young athletes, Ting said he was inspired by their dedication, discipline and passion in competing at an international level, noting that their participation reflected courage, perseverance and commitment to growth.

He also encouraged the players to build friendships with fellow participants from different countries, saying such connections would foster mutual understanding, cultural exchange and lasting bonds beyond the game.

Ting further invited visitors to explore Sarawak during their stay, expressing hope that they would leave with fond memories and become ambassadors of the state by sharing their experiences abroad.

He also expressed appreciation to ODEA for its support and sponsorship, noting that the Sarawak Government remained committed to supporting initiatives that promote sports development and international engagement.

“Your contribution to nurturing talent and strengthening global connections through sports is truly commendable and we are grateful for your role in making this event a success,”he said.

The championship, which runs from April 15 to 18, is organised by the World Chinese Tennis Federation in collaboration with the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA), bringing together international players for a four-day competition and cultural exchange.

Present at the opening ceremony were SLTA President, Datuk Patrick Liew; Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Xing Weiping; World Chinese Tennis Federation’s Chairman, Yu Jundong; and founder and first chairman Chen Ping, alongside other distinguished guests.
