World leaders congratulate Wong on PAP’s resounding victory

SINGAPORE: World leaders have sent Singapore Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, congratulatory messages after the resounding victory of the People’s Action Party (PAP) in the country’s General Election (GE2025) on Saturday.

They expressed their commitment to deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Singapore.

United States (US) Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has congratulated Wong and the PAP following their victory.

Rubio said the US looks forward to continuing close cooperation with the newly elected government and Wong to further strengthen economic ties, as well as bilateral defence and security cooperation – benefiting Americans, Singaporeans and others across the region.

“For nearly 60 years, the United States and Singapore have shared a strong and enduring strategic partnership and a commitment to a secure, free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” he said in a statement.

In congratulating Wong on his resounding victory, Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, wrote on X that he looks forward to continuing to work closely with Wong to further advance their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by close people-to-people ties,” he wrote.

European Council President, Antonio Costa, expressed his congratulations to Wong and wished him and his new government in Singapore all the best for their mandate.

“The EU is keen to further strengthen and deepen our important partnership,” he wrote on X.

Looking ahead to the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Singapore next year, Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, said he looks forward to working even more closely with Wong to further strengthen the excellent relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto, has extended his congratulations to Wong following the PAP’s electoral victory in GE2025.

“The decisive victory reflects the trust, stability and confidence of the people of Singapore in the strong leadership of Honourable Wong and the PAP. I believe that the new government will continue its success to lead Singapore,” he wrote on X.

Prabowo also expressed his intention to continue and further strengthen the partnership with the country under Wong’s leadership.

The two leaders last met on November 6, 2024, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, which was also Prabowo’s first official meeting with a foreign leader since taking office on October 20 that same year.

Expressing his congratulations to Wong, New Zealand Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, posted on X that New Zealand and Singapore share a strong and enduring friendship.

He added that he looks forward to celebrating 60 years of close ties and further deepening the partnership.

Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has extended his warmest congratulations to Wong on leading the PAP to victory in the country’s general election.

Noting that the prosperity and security of Malaysia and Singapore are indivisible, Anwar said both countries are bound not only by geography but also enduring ties of kith and kin.

“As we look to the future, our two countries are building a habit of deep collaboration at all levels – a vital foundation as we navigate profound challenges to global order and international trade,” he added.

The PAP successfully retained its super majority in GE2025, winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats.
