KUCHING: World Russian Language Day is observed annually on June 6 to celebrate the Russian language and its contributions to global culture, literature, education and communication.
The date coincides with the birthday of Alexander Pushkin, the renowned Russian poet, playwright and novelist who is widely regarded as the founder of modern Russian literature. His works continue to influence Russian language and culture and are studied around the world.
Established by the United Nations in 2010, World Russian Language Day is one of six UN language days aimed at promoting multilingualism, cultural diversity and the equal use of the organisation’s official languages.
Russian is among the most widely spoken languages in the world, with more than 250 million speakers globally. It serves as an official language in several countries and remains one of the six official languages of the United Nations, alongside Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.
The annual observance highlights the importance of preserving linguistic heritage while encouraging greater appreciation of cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding among communities.
Across the world, Russian-speaking communities mark the occasion through educational programmes, literary events, cultural performances, exhibitions, music and storytelling activities that showcase the richness of the language and its cultural traditions.
Language experts have long emphasised the importance of maintaining one’s mother tongue, noting that it plays a vital role in preserving cultural identity, strengthening family bonds and passing traditions, values and history from one generation to the next.
In an increasingly interconnected world, World Russian Language Day serves as a reminder that linguistic diversity remains a valuable part of humanity’s shared cultural heritage and an important foundation for cross-cultural understanding and global cooperation.
