MIRI: Severe flooding has left several villages in the Bekenu area without telecommunications, electricity, or basic supplies.

While nearly 300 flood victims have been transferred to the temporary relief centre (PPS) at SMK Bekenu, many remain trapped in their homes, with some refusing to evacuate due to concerns over property theft.

“Authorities are struggling to verify reports of those still in need of rescue, as communication lines are down.

“We are receiving numerous complaints, but we cannot confirm them as we are unable to contact the victims,” said Sibuti Member of Parliament Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni on Saturday.

Despite efforts to provide aid, access has been severely limited, particularly as floodwaters have made key routes impassable, he said.

Several villages, including Kampung Hunai, Jangalas, Menjelin, Kawang, Kelapak, Rambai, and Bulau, have been heavily affected, along with more than 50 longhouses.

“The worst-hit areas include Berkenu, Padang village in Sepupok, Niah, and several settlements in Suai, all within the Subis administrative district,” Lukanisman said during a Chinese New Year open house in Luak.

While many residents have sought refuge, some — particularly the elderly — are reluctant to leave their homes, citing fears of theft.

“Some are unwilling to move because they worry about their property. We have received reports that looting still occurs during the floods,” he added.

Despite these challenges, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), companies, and elected representatives have been providing aid.

However, food supplies remain limited due to difficulties in crossing the affected bridge.

Lukanisman urged residents to prioritise safety and evacuate to relief centres as the situation remains critical.
