KUCHING: The expansion of X-FAB Sarawak is set to strengthen the state’s semiconductor sector and reinforce its role in the global technology supply chain.

The RM3 billion project, launched at Sama Jaya High Tech Park today (Sept 12), will raise wafer production from 30,000 to 40,000 per month, with plans to reach 50,000 in the future.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the development reflects the success of long-term partnerships, clear policies and local commitment in building globally competitive industries.

“This latest expansion is proof that with long-term partnerships, clear policy direction and local determination, we can build globally competitive industries from our own backyard,” he said at today’s opening of the 40K Fab expansion.

Abang Johari pointed out that X-FAB’s output is powering technologies across automotive, medical, industrial and consumer sectors worldwide, and highlighted Sarawak’s pride in contributing to these global solutions.

He also emphasised local participation in the industry.

“We take great pride in the fact that 98 per cent of X-FAB Sarawak’s workforce are Malaysians, with almost 95 per cent being Sarawakians. Anak Sarawak are now contributing to the world’s semiconductor innovation, not just as workers, but as engineers, managers and leaders,” he said.

The Premier noted that Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone has created over 15,000 jobs and attracted RM15.4 billion in investments, establishing itself as a critical driver of Sarawak’s economy.

He extended the state government’s appreciation to X-FAB for its trust in Sarawak.

“We are proud to host this facility, but more importantly, we are proud to be part of your story, and to write the next chapter together,” he said.
