KUCHING: Last year’s runners-up, X-Lion, are expected to mount a strong challenge at the Sarawak Open Handball Championship 2025, scheduled to take place at UNIMAS, Kota Samarahan from September 15 to 18.
The team will field two squads – X-Lion A and X-Lion B – in the men’s category, both aiming to capture the Sarawak Premier Cup, which enters its 18th edition this year.
The prestigious tournament is organised by the Sarawak Handball Association (SAHA) and is held in honour of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari Tun Openg.
SAHA Secretary-General, Dr Abang Ismail Abang Julhi, said the presence of X-Lion this year signals their intent to go one step further after finishing second last season.
“X-Lion’s approach this year is different. Their focus is clear – they want to be champions,” he told Arena Suara Sarawak.
He added that both teams are already undergoing preparations and internal friendlies to fine-tune their lineup.
“We understand that training is underway, and they are holding matches among themselves to strengthen their tactics,” he said.
The Sarawak Open is one of the state’s major handball events, drawing participation from top local clubs and university teams.
