KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called for religious sensitivities to be respected following an insensitive statement made by an UMNO leader involving Catholic clergy and Christian scripture.
Yap said political differences should not be allowed to belittle the respect for religious beliefs and leaders.
“Malaysia is a multi-religious country, while Sarawak has a long-standing tradition of people with different faiths living together peacefully.
“I am disappointed that religious figures and sacred scripture could be used in such a manner in a political speech. Whether something is intended as a joke or political humour, there are certain boundaries that must be respected,” he said.
He cited political leaders could disagree on policies but should not use religion or religious figures as subjects of ridicule.
Yap also called on the individual responsible for the remarks to acknowledge the offence caused, withdraw the remarks and apologise to the Christian community.
“Political leaders should be building bridges, not creating unnecessary divisions. Let us practise politics that brings people together rather than using religion to score political points,” he said.
On the sideline, Yap handed over a RM100,000 from Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) grant to Christ Baptist Church.
He said the grant would assist the church in purchasing equipment for its religious activities as places of worship also served as community spaces for welfare, fellowship and other activities.
“This RM100,000 grant is about supporting the needs of the church and its congregation. UNIFOR is one of the ways the Sarawak Government demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that different religious communities receive attention and support,” he said adding that he would continue supporting initiatives benefiting religious and community institutions in Kota Sentosa.
