THE proposed lifelong monthly retirement aid of RM200 for Sarawak’s senior citizens demonstrates the confidence elderly Sarawakians place in the state government to protect their wellbeing, says Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.

However, he stressed that the initiative must also address the long-term financial realities.

“Sarawak has over 300,000 senior citizens. At RM200 monthly per person, the annual cost stands at RM720 million, before considering inflation, rising life expectancy and future demographic shifts.

“In two decades, that cost may double and our commitment must be equally long-lasting,” he said this when debating on the Supply (2026) Bill 2025 during the DUN sitting today (Nov 26).

Yap urged continued focus on growing the state’s income base, improving wages, and providing targeted assistance to the most vulnerable elderly groups.

He also stressed the importance of conducting a full feasibility study on a universal pension scheme as requested by the public.

“We must acknowledge the strong hopes of our elderly and the voices calling on their behalf.

“But Sarawak must walk a responsible and sustainable path.

“When the day comes, when our reserves are strong and our financial structure solid, then the pension scheme we introduce will not only be meaningful, but also permanent, reliable and sustainable for generations to come,” he said.
