Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, has criticised Violet Yong (DAP-Pending) for what he described as repeated theatrics and sweeping accusations in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, particularly over the delayed Baleh Dam project.

“I must express my disappointment with the Member for Pending and how she always chooses to dramatise her concerns in this august house.

“While it is every member’s right to raise issues, it must be done with decorum and a sense of responsibility,” he said while debating in support of the motion of appreciation to the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s speech in the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting here on Thursday.

Yap took issue with the suggestion that the delay in the Baleh Dam project was evidence of underperformance by the Sarawak government, civil servants, and government-linked companies (GLCs).

“To suggest, without nuance or evidence, that late delivery equates to incompetence reflects a shallow understanding of policy execution.

“Many of these projects are long-term, involving detailed planning, stakeholder engagement, and even overcoming federal-level bureaucracy.

“It is misleading and frankly, irresponsible, to imply that delays, many of which are outside the state government’s control, are signs of failure,” he said.

Yap added that the people of Sarawak deserve mature and intelligent discourse in the House, rather than “political performances aimed at headlines.”

“What we need in this House is maturity, not melodrama.

“The people of Sarawak expect us to engage in honest and intelligent discourse, not political performances aimed at headlines.

“The people of Sarawak expect us to engage in honest and intelligent discourse, not political performances aimed at headlines, and rise above showmanship and contribute meaningfully to solutions rather than casting aspersions from the sidelines,” he urged.
