KUCHING: Sarawak’s historic three-gold, four-bronze cycling campaign at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 represents more than a medal haul for Assistant Chef de Mission (ACDM) Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim – it is the culmination of eight years spent watching the team grow into one of the state’s success stories.
Ahmad, who has served as ACDM for the Sarawak cycling team since 2018, said he had witnessed the squad’s highs and lows before seeing it produce its best-ever SUKMA campaign.
“I am proud to see the Sarawak cycling team continue to grow, becoming stronger and more competitive.
“What we have achieved today did not happen overnight. It is the result of hard work, discipline, sacrifice, patience and the determination never to give up,” he said in a statement.
Sarawak returned from Selangor with three gold and four bronze medals across mountain bike, road, BMX and track events, marking the state’s best-ever cycling campaign at SUKMA.
Ahmad said the achievement reflected the collective effort of athletes, coaches, assistant coaches, team managers and support staff who had worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
“I am very proud of the entire team. This success is not only the result of the athletes’ performances in MTB, road, BMX and track events, but also the product of training, discipline, sacrifice and teamwork,” he said.
Looking ahead, Ahmad said the focus must now shift towards strengthening Sarawak’s long-term cycling programme.
“Our focus must now be on future planning, stronger athlete development and building an even better pathway for our young cyclists.
“This requires everyone to work together – the Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA), coaches, officials, athletes and valued partners such as the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and Buceros,“ he said.
He added that while the results in Selangor were a source of pride, they should also inspire the team to raise its ambitions.
“The achievements at this SUKMA have given us something to be proud of, but they should also motivate us to aim even higher. We must continue building on this momentum towards the next SUKMA in Kelantan and future national and international competitions,” he said.
Ahmad also urged athletes who missed out on medals not to lose heart, reminding them that setbacks were part of every sporting journey.
“Your time will come. Believe in yourself, trust your coaches and continue striving for excellence,” he said.
He concluded by congratulating the entire contingent for making Sarawak proud.
“Congratulations, Team Cycling Sarawak. You have made Sarawak proud. Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban!”
