KUCHING: A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 17 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here after pleading guilty to two charges related to stolen property.
Awang Shazereen Firdaus Awang Ridzuan admitted to the charges before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nadzwa Radzali, who ordered the sentences to run from the date of his arrest.
For the first charge, he was found to have dishonestly retained stolen property at about 9 pm on Feb 23 at a flat in Jalan Matang Batu 6 here.
The offence was framed under Section 411 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
On the second charge, he admitted that at about 11.46 am on Jan 28, at a gold shop here, he had dishonestly disposed of stolen jewellery, a bracelet, ring and charm belonging to the same victim.
The charge, committed in furtherance of common intention, was brought under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
According to the facts of the case, the victim’s rented house was broken into at about 3.30 pm on Jan 28.
Her bedroom was ransacked and several items were reported missing, including gold jewellery, a laptop, a tablet and a drill.
Police arrested Awang Shazereen at about 7.15 pm on Feb 23 in Satok.
The stolen laptop, tablet and drill were recovered, while two payment vouchers dated Jan 28 confirmed that part of the stolen jewellery had been sold to a gold shop.
A urine test conducted on the accused returned positive.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly, while the accused was unrepresented.
