KUCHING: Young officers at the Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) are at the forefront of the state’s push to become Malaysia’s leader in green and smart public transport, using artificial intelligence (AI) and modern mobility solutions to transform urban transport.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin highlighted the pivotal role of public servants, particularly younger officers, in implementing Sarawak’s ambitious transport agenda under the Post COVID Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“Mobility is not just about transport; it is about opportunity, dignity and progress.

“Our young officers are the engine of change, harnessing AI and digital technology to deliver innovative solutions that benefit all Sarawakians,” he said during the MOTS Appreciation and Recognition Ceremony 2025 at Sheraton Hotel on Thursday night.

Lee stated that the ministry is deploying AI-driven traffic management, intelligent transport systems and data analytics to support long-term urban planning while reducing road congestion.

“We need our officers to continuously enhance their digital skills and embrace emerging technologies so that Sarawak remains at the forefront of transport innovation,” Lee added.

Key initiatives include the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, slated to begin operations next year, and AirBorneo, the state’s first independently managed airline.

Both projects aim to improve accessibility, enhance travel safety, and promote low-carbon mobility across Sarawak.

Building on Sarawak’s push for inclusive mobility, Lee noted that the ART system is designed to serve all segments of society.

“A developed country is not one where the poor have cars, but one where the rich use public transport,” Lee said, quoting Enrique Peñalosa, former mayor of Bogotá.

He said that the ART system is designed to encourage public transport use across all income groups.

The minister also acknowledged strong collaboration with strategic partners such as Sarawak Metro, Road Transport Department (JPJ), Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP), Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), noting that their support is crucial for the successful delivery of transformative projects.

Through innovation, discipline and dedication, MOTS and its young officers are driving Sarawak’s transformation into a regional leader in sustainable, smart and low-carbon transport.
