KUCHING: More than 30 young adult volunteers from international organisation ASEZ WAO took part in a clean-up activity at Lorong Dogan, Sunny Park here recently, collecting about 2,500kg of rubbish in an effort to improve the local environment.

The activity, conducted under ASEZ WAO’s ‘Green Earth’ project, covered a 3km stretch around Sunny Park Commercial Centre and lasted for about two hours starting from 10am.

Volunteers included ASEZ WAO members as well as their family members, friends and colleagues, many of whom gave up their holiday to participate.

ASEZ WAO said the initiative reflected the group’s commitment to practical environmental action at the community level.

“We believe that real change begins with small but consistent efforts. By taking part in clean-up activities like this, we hope to contribute directly to a cleaner environment while encouraging the public to be more mindful of their surroundings.”

It added that the waste collected during the clean-up included plastic cups and straws, plastic bags, cigarette butts and beverage cans, with the total amount reaching approximately 2,500kg.

ASEZ WAO is the young adult volunteer group of the World Mission Society Church of God. Its name stands for ‘Save the Earth from A to Z, We Are One Family’, reflecting its emphasis on environmental protection and global citizenship.

“Our young adults want to lead by example. Through volunteer engagement, we hope to raise environmental awareness and inspire others to take part in protecting the community and ensuring a sustainable future.”

Beyond the ‘Green Earth’ project, ASEZ WAO continues to carry out various environmental initiatives, including the ‘Blue Ocean’ project, which focuses on cleaning urban areas, parks, rivers and seas; the ‘Mother’s Forest’ project aimed at reducing carbon emissions through tree planting; and the ‘2040 Plastic-Free’ campaign to reduce plastic pollution.

In Malaysia, the organisation has conducted clean-up activities at several locations, including Lutong Beach in Sarawak, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Sunway City in Selangor and Danau Kota in Kuala Lumpur.

It has also planted 200 trees in Taman Skudai, Johor Bahru, to help combat climate change, and painted a 20m mural at Taman Mesra Bako Community Hall here to enhance the local environment.
