KUCHING: Sarawak pride surged in the pool as six local talents helped power Malaysia to a silver medal finish at the 47th SEA Age Group Championships 2025.
The Sarawak contingent included Julius Abbas, Casper Tan, Bryan Lee, Presley Phang, Ong Zong Lian, and Samuel Chong — all selected for the national team.
All six players trained under Sarawak water polo coach Voon Yong Hui, who accompanied the national squad to Singapore.
“The boys are doing well but need more exposure. They’re ready for the next Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 if water polo is included.
“Some of our boys will also be part of this year’s SEA Games. I’m preparing them for the 2027 SEA Games, which will be held in Malaysia.
“I hope they continue training hard,” Voon told Sarawak Tribune when contacted recently.
For the record, Sarawak also had one female athlete selected to the national team — Sara Tham.
Power Aquatics Swimming Club, where Voon also serves as the club’s advisor, congratulated the Malaysian Water Polo team on their silver-medal performance, praising their passion, teamwork, and determination.
In a Facebook post the club described the team’s performance as inspiring and said the players had made the nation proud.
