KUCHING: A 30-year-old widow from Kampung Sikog, Mile 14, has received assistance from Hope Place Kuching after reaching out to the organisation for support in caring for her three young children.
Josephine Hirado lost her husband to bone cancer in March last year, leaving her to provide for three children aged between two and nine years old on her own.
Now working full-time as a cashier, Josephine earns just RM1,300 per month whilst juggling the demands of single parenthood. Her working hours, from 2pm to 10pm, present additional challenges in caring for her children.
To manage, Josephine relies on her mother to look after her seven and nine-year-old children whilst she works.
Her youngest, a two-year-old boy, stays with his paternal grandparents during the week. The toddler, whom Josephine fetches during the weekends, provides company for the couple who live by themselves.
When asked about her late husband, Josephine became visibly distressed, stating that her two older children frequently ask when their father will return home.
“I told my children that their father had gone to the moon. I didn’t have the heart to tell them that their father is gone forever,” Josephine told Hope Place staff.
Now, whenever the children see the moon at night, they think of their father.
To help ease Josephine’s burden during these difficult times, Hope Place is providing the family with ongoing basic food aid.
