KUCHING: A 23-year-old woman was fined RM1,000 or one month in jail by the Magistrates’ Court today for openly engaging in online gambling at a café in Demak Laut.
Christina Sentunitas, a lottery operator, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali to a charge framed under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 for gambling in a public place.
The offence carries a penalty of up to RM5,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.
According to the prosecution, a police team raided the café at about 7:20 pm on November 29 and arrested Christina, who was found gambling using her mobile phone.
Officers also seized a mobile phone and RM102 in cash.
Investigations later confirmed, through a gambling expert’s report, that the device had been used for gambling activities.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani, prosecuted, while the accused was not represented.
