KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has officially established its Youth Council, comprising 22 students, aged nine to 17, from various schools across Samarahan.
The initiative, encouraged by United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) under the United Nations and supported by the Samarahan community, aims to nurture leadership skills among young people, preparing them for future roles as leaders.
The Youth Council held its first meeting on Saturday which served as an introductory session and briefing.
MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said the council believes that leadership development should begin at an early age.
“Youths are our future – as such, we must train them early. Samarahan has youths who are motivated and eager to learn. A little push from MPKS is what is needed to mould them into the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
Minos pointed out that the Youth Council initiative is not solely the result of UNICEF’s encouragement but a reflection of MPKS’ commitment to the development of Samarahan’s younger generation.
Drawing inspiration from Malaysia’s Mini Parliament, he said the Youth Council aims to expose young people to leadership, governance, and decision-making processes, empowering them to take on future challenges effectively.
“The move is part of MPKS’ ongoing efforts to invest in the next generation, ensuring they are well-prepared to lead Samarahan and contribute to the region’s progress,” he said.
