ASAJAYA: Grooming young leaders is critical to Sarawak’s continued social harmony and development, said Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Highlighting the importance of early exposure to leadership, Abdul Karim said the Sarawak National Youth Organisation (SABERKAS) provides a platform where youth from all communities can interact, learn and develop a balanced outlook.

“This is where young leaders are nurtured, gaining a harmonious perspective free from extremism or ethnic bias,” he said during the SABERKAS Reach Out programme at Kampung Tambirat Community Hall here today.

The minister, who is also SABERKAS president, stressed that government support extends to all religions, with millions channelled to build houses of worship and foster religious tolerance.

“As long as communities uphold respect and order, they receive our support. This is key to Sarawak’s social cohesion,” he said.

Abdul Karim also emphasised the role of local leaders and parents in guiding youth to prevent social ills.

“If young people are caught up in drugs, crime or social problems, it is the responsibility of society to guide them. Our goal is to raise responsible future leaders,” he added.

On regional development, the minister highlighted major infrastructure projects transforming previously remote areas.

“Asajaya, once a challenging area to access, has undergone significant growth. Now we have ongoing infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges and an elevated highway from Serian to Asajaya, along with long-term plans for a major export port,” he said.

He encouraged youth to open their minds to opportunities.

“The younger generation is the heir to what we have built. We want them to embrace education and leadership roles to sustain Sarawak’s growth,” Abdul Karim said.

The minister also noted the state’s focus on education support, citing RM100,000 annually to Parent and Teacher’s Association (PTA) for Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Asajaya and SMK Hajjah Laila Taib as well as financial assistance for students entering public universities, ensuring continued access to higher education for the state’s youth.

He added that the programme reflects the state government’s commitment to engaging communities directly, understanding their needs and empowering youth across Sarawak.
