KUCHING: The newly formed 2024–2026 AZAM Young Souls (AYS) Committee met on Saturday for its annual Gathering Night, using the occasion to reflect on responsibilities and set priorities for the year ahead.
The gathering went beyond a routine meeting, providing a platform for discussions on leadership, accountability, and youth involvement in AZAM initiatives, while serving as a reality check and opportunity for members to reset expectations.
“AYS is entering a more structured phase. It is not just a support group, but a platform where young leaders can contribute ideas, energy, and leadership to advance AZAM’s work,” said Donald Henry Nohed, board member of AZAM Sarawak and representative of the Youth Engagement Committee.
The committee will also be expected to uphold higher standards of discipline, transparency, and accountability as AZAM collaborates with other agencies and stakeholders.
“Real youth leadership comes from values, teamwork, and integrity, not popularity,” Donald added.
AZAM views young people not just as participants, but as content creators shaping positive narratives, future leaders influencing decisions, and responsible influencers who can inspire communities and contribute to Sarawak’s development.
Through AYS, youth are given practical opportunities to learn, lead, and serve, with a focus on communication, volunteerism, and community engagement.
The approach according to AZAM reflects the vision of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Patron of AZAM, who has emphasised the need to equip young people with the skills, values, and purpose required to lead in a rapidly changing world.
To support these responsibilities, AZAM will launch a Capacity Building Programme next month, aimed at strengthening leadership confidence, deepening organisational knowledge, and equipping members with practical skills for programme delivery.
Looking towards 2026, the committee aims to grow steadily, serve meaningfully, and lead with purpose, as AZAM underscores that investing in youth leadership is key to Sarawak’s future.
