BINTULU: Sarawak’s youth have been urged to spearhead the state’s green energy and high-tech transformation, turning its natural resources and innovation potential into a sustainable and globally competitive future.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg made the call at the Sarawak Youth Week 2025 held at the Bintulu Civic Centre today, highlighting the state’s abundant natural resources as key drivers for renewable energy development.
“We have rivers, we have water. We can generate hydrogen; we can produce renewable energy. Who will drive this? We are old. The ones who will make Sarawak strong are those before me today,” he said, stressing that the responsibility to harness these resources rests with the younger generation.
He also noted Sarawak’s investment in human capital, with locals already taking leadership roles in major projects such as the methanol plant in Samalaju.
“We have trained Sarawakians to become engineers, and they are now managing the methanol plant in Samalaju,” he added.
On the technological front, the Premier emphasised the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation.
“We are building an AI-based economy. Today, Sarawakians can design chips. We are no longer only consumers but creators of high technology.
“Some of our research and development is conducted abroad, such as in Cardiff, United Kingdom, where our scientists are working on new chip designs, leading to the creation of Ketek AI.
“When we have intellectual property rights, these are ours. One day, we could even establish a company on par with Nvidia. This is our future,” he told the youth.
Abang Johari further reminded the younger generation on the importance of good governance and prudent resource management for long-term development.
“If we have leaders who know how to manage our resources and economy, Sarawak will not fall behind,” he said.
He encouraged young Sarawakians to embrace their identity as they innovate and lead.
“Be proud to be a child of Sarawak. Sarawak first,” he said.
