KUCHING: More than 120 participants from across Malaysia gathered here on Friday (Aug 7) for the opening of the Kuching Festival Yuanji Dance 2026 at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Square.
The festival aimed to promote healthy living while strengthening friendships among Yuanji communities nationwide.
Among those taking part were participants from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Kuantan, Batu Pahat, Miri, Penang, Kuching and Samarahan.
Speaking on behalf of MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, MBKS Deputy Mayor Datuk Zaiedi Suhaili said the encouraging turnout showed how Yuanji Dance could bring people from different places together through a common interest.

He also expressed his appreciation to those who had travelled from outside Kuching, saying their presence not only enlivened the festival but also strengthened ties among the participating Yuanji communities.
Wee described Yuanji Dance as more than just a form of dance, saying it combines body movement, music and exercise in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
“Its gentle and structured movements help improve flexibility, coordination and physical wellbeing, making it an activity suitable for people of all ages,” he said.
Beyond its physical benefits, he said practising Yuanji Dance in groups also gives participants the opportunity to socialise, interact with others and build friendships while staying active.
“We want to see Kuching become a city that is not only physically developed but also home to a healthy, active and caring community,” he said.
Wee also reminded the public that good health is a long-term investment, encouraging people to make simple activities such as walking, dancing and regular exercise part of their daily lives rather than waiting until they fall ill.
