KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional’s (BN) commitment to the Unity Government will end once the 15th Parliament is dissolved, its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today (Sept 27).
“The moment Parliament is dissolved, we are no longer with them (Unity Government). This is our promise,” he said in his keynote address at the 18th annual general assembly of Parti Makkal Sakti Malaysia at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
According to a report by Astro Awani, Ahmad Zahid said BN had decided to join the Unity Government following the 15th General Election and would honour that commitment until the current parliamentary term ends.
“In a complex situation, we want a fixed compass. BN decided to be part of the government after GE15, and our commitment remains to stay in the government until the end of the 15th term,” he said.
He said the commitment formed part of BN’s pledge to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong following the formation of the Unity Government.
However, Ahmad Zahid stressed that being part of the government did not mean BN had surrendered its political identity or its right to maintain its own positions.
Earlier this month, he had similarly said BN would remain with the Unity Government until the end of the current parliamentary term. – Awani
