KUCHING: Former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim’s recent call for the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) to be cancelled and assertion that Sabah and Sarawak are burdens have touched a raw nerve.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Miri (Piasau) Branch Publicity secretary Tan Lek Jin said while Zaid’s comments, which have gone viral, reflect his personal opinion, MA63 is far more than an individual view.

It is a foundational document that shaped the formation of Malaysia, he reminded.

“MA63 sets the terms under which Sabah, Sarawak and Malaya agreed to form a federation. It carries constitutional significance for the structure of the nation.

“Claims that it is invalid or ‘useless’ simply lack legal basis and overlook the legitimate rights and historical context of Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

Tan warned that dismissing MA63 could stir unease in Sabah and Sarawak.

“Such statements risk being interpreted as belittling the historical status of our two East Malaysian regions. It can heighten suspicion, affect trust, and potentially disrupt ongoing negotiations.

“The Federal Government is gradually implementing MA63 commitments, including fiscal powers, resource management, and administrative devolution,” he said.

Tan stressed that discussions involving MA63 should be grounded in the constitution, historical records and the legal framework governing federal-state relations.

“Emotional or simplistic statements may politicise the matter, trigger unnecessary controversy, and slow down policy implementation.

“While individual remarks cannot affect the legality of MA63, they can influence public sentiment and policy communication.

“The priority remains to advance the implementation of MA63 based on legal principles, historical facts, and the spirit of negotiation, to ensure Sabah and Sarawak’s rights within the federation are fully respected and realised,” he added.
