KUCHING: The Sarawak Rugby Union elected Zainal Abidin Abdullah as the new president of Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) for the 2024-2027 term with immediate effect.
Zainal Abidin is the general manager of Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) as well as the chairman of MAKSAK Sarawak Rugby Development.
“Firstly, I would like to thank outgoing president Richard Song Swee Jin for his massive contribution and generosity to Sarawak rugby during his tenure and I would like to continue his good work and uplift the sport of rugby in Sarawak.
“I will not make any drastic changes but as a way forward, we would like to become more professional in our approach to become more inclusive with our affiliates and develop the game at its grassroots,” he said in his opening remarks as the newly minted president.
Song expressed happiness to pass the presidency to a young and capable successor and wishes the incoming office bearers to continue the good work accomplished over the past nine years.
“I’m happy to pass the presidency to a young and capable successor and I wish the incoming office bearers to continue the good work we have done in the past nine years,” said a statement issued by SRU on Sunday.

The following individuals were also elected and appointed: Ahmad Yusop Shah Mohksen as deputy president, Prof Ir Ts Dr Al-Khalid Othman as vice president I, Bunyamin Matnor as vice president II, Rashid Salleh as honorary secretary, Zakaria Hamzah as assistant honorary secretary, and Ahmad Tarmizi as honorary treasurer.
