KUCHING: The General Manager of the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC), Zainal Abidin Abdullah, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) for the 2025-2027 term.

His appointment reflects industry-wide recognition of his capabilities and leadership in steering Malaysia’s timber sector toward a sustainable and innovative growth.

Zainal Abidin expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, and pledged to work collaboratively with stakeholders across the value chain.

“My expectation is to work closely with all stakeholders to enhance industry standards, promote responsible forest management, and expand market access both domestically and internationally,” he said in a statement.

He further highlighted the importance of collaboration in boosting the timber industry’s competitiveness while ensuring it remains aligned with environmental and social responsibilities.

“Sarawak’s vast natural resources and heritage in timber and wood products give us a strong edge.

“There is great potential to grow the industry through technology adoption, efficient supply chains, and access to emerging markets,” he added.

He added that with the right policies, a comprehensive mechanism and coordinated efforts across Malaysia’s three timber-producing regions, the sector could set new benchmarks for sustainability and economic contribution.

“I also thanked the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities and the government for their continued confidence in my leadership,” he added.

In the meantime, STIDC has expressed its full support for Zainal Abidin’s appointment, and looks forward to strengthening its cooperation with MTC to further develop the national timber industry.

The timber and wood sector continues to play a crucial role in the nation’s economy, and his appointment is expected to usher in a renewed strategic direction for the years ahead.
