MIRI: In a display of remarkable community commitment, Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) reported that zakat contributions for 2024 reached a staggering RM143 million, with the majority of this amount earmarked for charitable distribution.
During a Raya open house at the Islamic Complex in Miri today, Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie, the general manager of TBS, shared insights into the impressive figures.
“From the RM143 million collected, we have distributed RM112 million to those in need,” he revealed, emphasising that the funds directly benefited individuals affected by hardship and those classified as asnaf.
The three cities leading the way in zakat contributions were Kuching, Bintulu, and Miri.
Kuching emerged as the top contributor, followed closely by Bintulu. Miri, in third place, has shown a commendable increase in the community’s dedication to fulfilling their religious obligations.
Abang Mohd stated that these urban areas are characterised by a higher proportion of income earners, which undoubtedly contributes to their robust zakat collections.
The distribution of zakat funds has been strategically organised through four primary programmes: education, welfare, institutional support, and skills enhancement.
These initiatives are specifically aimed at supporting the B40 group and those identified as asnaf, ensuring that the aid reaches those who are most vulnerable in society.
“The rise in zakat contributions, particularly those made through salary deductions, is a very encouraging trend,” Abang Mohd noted.
“It reflects a growing awareness among the Muslim community of their charitable responsibilities.”
He encouraged the community to sustain this momentum, stressing the significant role that these contributions play in addressing social inequalities and uplifting the underprivileged.
