SIBU: From January 1 to November 15, the police have received a total of 1,234 pieces of information on illegal gambling activities statewide.
Of the number, State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Dennis Leong said that 993 of the informations had led to arrests and seizures.
Thus, he called on the public to not fear of being victimised after informing the police on illegal gambling activities.
He added that the identity of informants would always be kept confidential. “There are some people who are worried that the police will ask for their name and contact number when they call us. They are worried that something will happen to them when their particulars are given to the police,” said Leong during a press conference at Sibu District Police Headquarters here yesterday.
He reiterated that the police needed the particulars of the informants so that when they could not find the location of the crime, they would be able to call the informant.
“So far nothing have happened to these informants. There is no need to worry about giving your name and contact number to the police. We will assure that all information on the callers will be kept confidential,” he said.
He also urged the public to provide the police with the latest information and not something which was a week old or so.
The public can reach the state CID hotline at 082-274213. On his visit to Sibu District Police, Leong said it was to reveal the challenges faced by the different stations on illegal gambling.
He added that they needed to find ways to improve on what they have been doing. Also present at the press conference were Sibu District Police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo and Sibu CID deputy chief Supt Benedict Faris Jimoy.
