KUCHING: A late-night police raid on an entertainment centre along Jalan Canna here led to the arrest of 17 individuals for alleged drug abuse and drug possession early this morning.
The district’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID), together with Sarawak CID and Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID), stormed the premises in an integrated operation at around 1.15 am.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said 29 individuals — 25 men and four women — were screened during the operation.
Initial urine tests found 16 of them positive for drugs, leading to their arrest under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
“Police also detained a 45-year-old man after he was found in possession of 5.17g of suspected ketamine worth around RM258.50.
“The suspect tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine and benzo during a urine screening,” he said.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries imprisonment of up to five years and up to nine strokes of the cane upon conviction.
The suspect, who has no prior record, is being remanded for four days until Apr 30 to facilitate investigations.
Alexson said the success of the operation stemmed from sustained intelligence efforts and strong public cooperation, stressing that police will not tolerate any involvement in drug-related activities, which remain serious offences under the law.
The NCID remains steadfast in its fight against drug abuse to safeguard both present and future generations, and urged the public to continue sharing information via its hotline at 012-20872222 (Bukit Aman) or 017-5929211 (Sarawak).
