KUCHING: Seventeen notices were issued against contractors for various offences during a recent integrated enforcement operation involving multiple agencies.

The operation, led by the Sarawak Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in collaboration with the Sarawak Labour Department, Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM), Occupational Safety and Health Department (OSHD), Ministry of Health (MOH), and Sarawak Regional Construction Academy (ABM), aimed to ensure compliance with construction laws across Kuching.

According to a statement by CIDB Malaysia, the operation focused on contractor and worker registration, construction site safety, worker health, and compliance with industry regulations.

“Several contractors failed to meet CIDB’s requirements, including not possessing a CIDB Registration Certificate, failing to register their construction workers, and neglecting safety management at construction sites.

“A total of 14 notices were issued by CIDB against contractors who did not comply with the CIDB Malaysia Act 1994 (Act 520), which governs the development of the country’s construction industry.

“Meanwhile, OSHD issued three notices for violations of occupational safety and health regulations at several construction sites,” CIDB said.

Inspections were also carried out by the Labour Department and CCM to ensure companies and workers met registration requirements and that workers’ rights were upheld. The MOH conducted health inspections, focusing on hygiene and health facilities at construction sites.

CIDB said that such operations are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen compliance and safety standards in the construction industry.

“Further action will be taken against contractors who fail to adhere to regulations, including potential fines or legal measures,” it said.

Authorities will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement to uphold safety, quality, and legal standards in the construction sector, and contractors are urged to comply immediately to avoid stricter legal action in the future.

The public is encouraged to report any violations in the construction sector to Sarawak CIDB or relevant agencies to ensure the industry develops safely, sustainably, and in full compliance with regulations.
