33 fined over drug offences in Bau court

BAU: A total of 33 individuals charged with drug-related offences at the Magistrate’s Court here on May 25 and 26 were fined between RM2,500 and RM4,100, in default between six and 12 months’ imprisonment.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan also ordered several offenders to undergo two years of police supervision following their convictions under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A Rahman said a total of 34 investigation papers involving offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 were brought before the Bau Magistrate’s Court during the two-day sitting.

“A total of 16 individuals were charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Act.

“The court imposed fines ranging from RM2,500 to RM3,500, with imprisonment terms of between six and 12 months in default of payment,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Haide said some of the accused faced as many as three charges under the same section.

“Meanwhile, 17 individuals pleaded guilty to offences under Section 12(2) of the same Act.

“They were fined between RM2,500 and RM4,100, with default jail terms ranging from six to 11 months,” he said.

He added that some of the accused also faced two charges under the same section.

The monthly circuit court sitting was held during the fourth week of May to hear cases related to drug offences.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly.
