KUCHING: The Brarak and Bipajak Gawai Bisegu returns on June 2, 2026, celebrating unity, heritage, and community spirit through a parade, communal meal, and cultural festivities.
Organised by Persatuan Segu Bunuk Penrissen (PSBP) at Kampung Segu Bunuk, Jalan Puncak Borneo, this annual event is entering its fourth edition.
The event, which has garnered strong support and growing interest over the years, will be held in two segments. It will begin with a grand parade, followed by a bipajak (communal meal), and culminate in an official opening ceremony and evening entertainment at the longhouse awah (open verandah).
Transport Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, who is also the Mambong assemblyman, is expected to flag off the parade and later officiate at the opening ceremony.
He will be accompanied by Puncak Borneo MP and PSBP patron, Datuk Willie Anak Mongin.
The parade began from humble beginnings in 2023, involving only six contingents with about 200 participants representing the six Bisegu villages. Since then, the event has grown into a vibrant community movement.
Last year, it attracted 20 contingents and more than 4,000 participants and spectators, reflecting its rising popularity and significance.
This year’s edition is expected to be even more grand, although the number of contingents will likely be maintained at 20, with each comprising up to 20 participants.
Willie said contingents representing the six Bisegu villages – Kampung Segu Bunuk, Kampung Sorot Bunuk, Kampung Sumur Bunuk, Kampung Bratan Bunuk, Kampung Punau Bunuk, and Kampung Sibatuh Bunuk – along with various organisations and community groups are expected to participate in the parade.
“A special open contingent will also be introduced to allow individuals to take part in the parade. Preparations are currently underway to ensure the smooth running of the event,” he told a press conference at his service centre at Jalan Puncak Borneo here today.
The parade will begin at the Mount Barau Information Centre, located at the entrance to Kampung Segu Bunuk, before proceeding into the village, passing through the renowned Bunuk longhouse, and concluding at the Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Bunuk.
This will be followed by a bipajak (communal meal) at the Dewan Serbaguna, after which the programme will continue at the longhouse for the evening segment.
Willie also invites sponsors to support their upcoming event, offering a valuable opportunity for businesses and partners to gain visibility while contributing to a meaningful occasion.
He said by becoming a sponsor, organisations can showcase their brand to a targeted audience, enhance their public image, and build strong community connections.
He notes that the Brarak & Bipajak Gawai Bisegu is no longer just an iconic Gawai parade in the Penrissen-Padawan area; it has evolved into a living expression of identity, pride, and cultural continuity.
“This annual event, which symbolises unity, gratitude, and the spirit of a bountiful harvest season, also seeks to preserve cultural heritage and traditions.
“It aims to foster kinship among the Bisegu and other Bidayuh clans in Puncak Borneo, strengthen unity and cooperation across all levels of society, preserve Gawai traditions among the younger generation, establish itself as a key annual cultural event of PSBP, promote tourism in the Penrissen-Padawan region, and honour the rich heritage of the Bisegu community,” he said.
He added that organisations that are interested to sponsor and participate in the event can contact PSBP secretary, Aden Nagrace at 013-8105683.
Willie said several local artistes and entertainers will also be invited to perform, adding vibrancy to the evening’s programme.
Renowned Bidayuh singer from Serian, Alon Lupeng – popular for his hit song ‘Bujang Semalam’ – has confirmed his participation.
The singer-songwriter has 10 Bidayuh albums and nine Iban albums to his credit, with his latest Bidayuh album expected to be released later this month.
PSBP chairman, Gabriel Michael Tomi was also present.
