THE Sarawak Government has identified 5,977 kilometres of ‘last mile’ roads across the state for progressive takeover, upgrading and maintenance under the State Road MARRIS maintenance scheme.

Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said the initiative was part of the GPS government’s commitment to ensuring no settlement in Sarawak is left behind in terms of connectivity and access to basic infrastructure.

“Recognising this issue, my ministry together with JKR Sarawak has undertaken extensive ground assessments and identification works throughout Sarawak to ensure that these missing links are properly documented and addressed,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech during the DUN Sitting today.

Uggah, who is also Deputy Premier, said the state government had approved a proposal for the roads to be progressively taken over, upgraded and maintained under the state road maintenance scheme.

“This initiative will greatly improve the safety, comfort and accessibility of rural communities,” he said.

He said that the ‘Last Mile Mission’ was introduced as part of the government’s continuous effort to close the remaining connectivity gap, particularly in rural and remote areas.

According to him, the term ‘last mile’ refers to roads connecting major settlements that are currently not maintained under the government’s maintenance programme.

“Many of these roads consist of former logging roads, active and inactive timber roads. Although these roads serve as the only land access for many communities, they have yet to be formally taken over and maintained by the government,” he said.

Uggah said the effort demonstrated the government’s commitment towards inclusive development and equitable infrastructure delivery for all Sarawakians.

“The ‘Last Mile Mission’ is not merely about building roads, but about connecting the rakyat to economic opportunities, healthcare, education and essential services,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, he said that Sarawak’s total road network currently stands at 40,255 kilometres (km), comprising 38,634 km of state roads and 1,621 km of federal roads maintained under the government maintenance programme.

He said the figure reflected a significant increase of 6,908 km registered in 2025, largely due to the conversion and registration of former logging roads as well as active and inactive timber roads into state roads under the maintenance programme.
