SINCE 2023, a total of 629 Emergency Response Work projects worth RM696 million have been approved, reflecting the Sarawak Government’s continued efforts to strengthen disaster recovery and restore essential infrastructure across the state.
Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said of these, 366 projects valued at RM277.19 million have already been completed, while 263 projects worth RM418.82 million are currently at various stages of implementation.
He added that the works are part of ongoing post-disaster response measures aimed at ensuring public safety and reconnecting affected communities following natural disasters.
“In addition, under the Minor Emergency Work Assistance Fund (MEWAF), a total of 170 projects amounting to RM44.68 million have been approved since 2020.
“Of these, 87 projects worth RM23.73 million have been completed while 83 projects worth RM20.95 million,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting here today.
Uggah said the initiatives form part of broader disaster management improvements in Sarawak, which also include the development of Pusat Pemindahan Kekal Bencana (PPKB) facilities funded by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
“This initiative reduces reliance on schools as temporary relief centres and ensures that evacuation and relief operations are carried out in a more efficient and organised manner.
“It also strengthens long-term disaster preparedness and enhances the overall national disaster response system.
“NADMA has approved two PPKB projects in Sarawak – at SK Beradek, Kuching, valued at RM8.5 million and currently under construction, and at Long Busang, Kapit, valued at RM9 million and currently at the design stage,” said Uggah.
He also said to complement these disaster management efforts, NADMA has provided three sets of Bailey bridges.
“The Bailey bridge at Sungai Baleh, Long Banga, Miri was completed in February 2026, while the Bailey bridges at Sungai Bunau, Long Tebangan, Miri and Sungai Benuang, Long Jeeh, Miri are still under construction and expected to be completed in 2027,” he said.
